SOFT PORCELAIN

Aachen, Germany, 2016

‘Soft Porcelain’ is a family of objects created under the influence of two ideas: first, the expression of the material characteristics of porcelain, both soft (raw) and hard (fired) and second, the suggestion of the trace of an inner structure.

The objects were made using a hand-knitted 100% cotton net attached to a round wooden frame as a hanging structure. The porcelain was then carefully attached to this net. The cotton net burns during the firing process as the porcelain reaches 1280 degrees Celsius, leaving only a trace on its surface.

This procedure was repeated numerous times and every iteration showed different results as the interaction between porcelain, the wooden frame, the cotton net and the forces of gravity were every time unique and unreproducible.

The thirteen objects are all different, but share common characteristics. Porcelain can still be fluffy, soft, and delicate as it hardens after the firing process.
